Fold (geology)
Welcome to the third episode of the Structural Geology course! Building on our foundational understanding of structural geology and faults, this episode focuses on folds. Folds are one of the most common geological structures, formed when originally planar surfaces, such as sedimentary strata, are bent or curved as a result of permanent deformation. We'll explore the different types of folds (anticlines, synclines, monoclines, etc.), their geometry, and the forces that cause them. You'll learn how to identify folds in the field and interpret their significance in understanding the tectonic history of a region. We'll build on this knowledge in later episodes to discuss other structural features, such as joints, strike and dip, and more.
